Cancer can bring out just the wrong words

From USA Today on 2009-02-09

It is hard to know what to say to someone who has just been diagnosed with cancer. The article is helpful. The points that I took away from the article were:

  • Just listen to the patient and be with him/her. Let him/her know you will be there for them.

  • Then don't forget them. Send a card, email or phone often. The cancer patient feels he/she has support, someone does care.

  • Talk to them about anything other than cancer, so they can feel normal.

  • Offer specific help.

  • Celebrate survival. Let them know about those who survived cancer.
